Yiota and Jimmy
A Greek Orthodox Wedding
Tradition, Wildflowers and a Ladder
When Yiota and Jimmy came to me, they had a clear vision and a long list of requirements. They wanted a planner who understood Greek Orthodox wedding traditions, and a venue that could host their wedding party for several days, sat within reach of London, had a church nearby and worked to their budget. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so long searching, but eventually I found it. Seeing how happy they were when we finally discovered the place is exactly why the hours behind the scenes are worth it.
With a considered budget but no shortage of beautiful ideas, the décor called for a creative approach rather than a compromise. I found a wonderful local flower farm to create the bridal bouquets and supply buckets of freshly cut seasonal flowers. The rest I took on myself: on the morning of the wedding I hand-arranged them into bud vases for colourful, relaxed displays throughout the reception. The venue’s brickwork and exposed beams inspired another idea, a web of soft voile draping sweeping across the ceiling, so the day before, up the ladder I went. The combination of flowing fabric, flowers and carefully considered details transformed the space entirely, without an extravagant budget.
One detail had nothing to do with aesthetics. Knowing someone very dear to the family couldn’t be there, I created a small dedicated place within the reception to honour their memory. Nothing grand, but deeply personal, and seeing what it meant to Jimmy reminded me that the smallest details often carry the greatest significance.
From the flowers and their four-legged ring bearer to the ceremony, reception and timeline, everything fell into place. My job became keeping things moving quietly in the background while Yiota and Jimmy enjoyed every minute, and they really did. That’s always my best measure of a beautifully planned wedding: not how the room looked or whether everything ran on time, but whether my couple were able to be completely present for it.
